Mt. Pinatubo in Zambales

Mount Pinatubo (SambalBakil nin PinatubuKapampanganBunduk/Bulkan ning Pinatubu, Bunduk ning Apu MalyariPangasinanPalandey/Bulkan na PinatubuIlokanoBantay PinatuboTagalogBundok/Bulkang Pinatubo) is an active stratovolcano in the Zambales Mountains, located on the tripoint boundary of the Philippine provinces of ZambalesTarlac and Pampanga, all in Central Luzon on the northern island of Luzon.[3][4] Its eruptive history was unknown to most before the pre-eruption volcanic activities of 1991, just before June. Pinatubo was heavily eroded, inconspicuous and obscured from view. It was covered with dense forests which supported a population of several thousand indigenous Aetas.
Pinatubo is most notorious for its VEI 6 eruption on June 15, 1991, the second-largest terrestrial eruption of the 20th century after the 1912 eruption of Novarupta in Alaska.[5] Complicating the eruption was the arrival of Typhoon Yunya, bringing a lethal messy mix of ash and rain to towns and cities surrounding the volcano. Predictions at the onset of the climactic eruption led to the evacuation of tens of thousands of people from the surrounding areas, saving many lives. Surrounding areas were severely damaged by pyroclastic surges, ash falls, and subsequently, by the flooding lahars caused by rainwater re-mobilizing earlier volcanic deposits. This caused extensive destruction to infrastructure and changed river systems for years after the eruption.[5][6]
The effects of the eruption were felt worldwide. It ejected roughly 10,000,000,000 tonnes (1.1×1010 short tons) or 10 km3 (2.4 cu mi) of magma, and 20,000,000 tonnes (22,000,000 short tons) of SO
2, bringing vast quantities of minerals and toxic metals to the surface environment. It injected more particulate into the stratosphere than any eruption since Krakatoa in 1883. Over the following months, the aerosols formed a global layer of sulfuric acid haze. Global temperatures dropped by about 0.5 °C (0.9 °F) in the years 1991–93,[7] and ozone depletion temporarily increased substantially.

Mayon Volcano in Albay

Image result for Mayon Volcano

Mayon, the most famous of the active volcanoes of the Philippines, is a perfect stratovolcano rising to 2462 m on Luzon Island. It erupts very frequently.

Mayon is the archetype of a symmetrical stratovolcano and one of the world most active ones. It has frequent eruptions producing pyroclastic flows, mud flows and ash falls that repeatedly triggered large-scale evacuations. Mayon's most violent eruption, in 1814, killed more than 1200 people and devastated several towns.
the volcano rises 2462 m above the Albay Gulf and has very steep upper slopes averaging 35-40 degrees capped by a small summit crater.
Historical records of eruptions date back to 1616 and range from strombolian to basaltic plinian, with cyclical activity beginning with basaltic eruptions, followed by longer term andesitic lava flows. Eruptions occur predominately from the central conduit and have also produced lava flows that travel far down the flanks. Pyroclastic flows and mudflows have commonly swept down many of the approximately 40 ravines that radiate from the summit and have often devastated populated lowland areas.

Taal Volcano is a complex volcano located on the island of Luzon in the Philippines. It is the second most active volcano in the Philippines with 33 historical eruptions. All of these eruptions are concentrated on Volcano Island, an island near the middle of Taal Lake. The lake partially fills Taal Caldera, which was formed by prehistoric eruptions between 140,000 and 5,380 BP. Viewed from Tagaytay Ridge, Taal Volcano and Lake presents one of the most picturesque and attractive views in the Philippines. It is located about 50 kilometres (31 miles) south of the capital of the country, the city of Manila.
The volcano had several violent eruptions in the past causing loss of life in the island and the populated areas surrounding the lake, with the death toll estimated at around 5,000 to 6,000. Because of its proximity to populated areas and its eruptive history, the volcano was designated a Decade Volcano, worthy of close study to prevent future natural disasters. All volcanoes of the Philippines are part of the Pacific Ring of Fire.

Chocolate Hills in Bohol

The Chocolate Hills are probably Bohol's most famous tourist attraction. They look like giant mole hills, or as some say, women's breasts, and remind us of the hills in a small child's drawing. Most people who first see pictures of this landscape can hardly believe that these hills are not a man-made artifact. However, this idea is quickly abandoned, as the effort would surely surpass the construction of the pyramids in Egypt. The chocolate hills consist of are no less than 1268 hills (some claim this to be the exact number). They are very uniform in shape and mostly between 30 and 50 meters high. They are covered with grass, which, at the end of the dry season, turns chocolate brown. From this color, the hills derive their name. At other times, the hills are green, and the association may be a bit difficult to make.

Legend has it that the hills came into existence when two giants threw stones and sand at each other in a fight that lasted for days. When they were finally exhausted, they made friends and left the island, but left behind the mess they made. For the more romantically inclined is the tale of Arogo, a young and very strong giant who fell in love with an ordinary mortal girl called Aloya. After she died, the giant Arogo cried bitterly. His tears then turned into hills, as a lasting proof of his grief.

However, up to this day, even geologists have not reached consensus on how they where formed. The most commonly accept theory is that they are the weathered formations of a kind of marine limestone on top of a impermeable layer of clay. If you climb the 214 steps to the top of the observation hill near the complex, you can read this explanation on a bronze plaque.

Maria Cristina Falls, located in Iligan City, is one of the top tourist destinations in the country. It is also referred to as the “twin falls” because of the rock at its brink that separates the water’s flow, although this can only be witnessed if the plant is not operational.

The waterfalls reaches 98-meter high with a 320-meter drop making it one of the highest in the country. The source of this powerful falls is the country’s largest freshwater lake, Lake Lanao. This huge body of water supplies not only Maria Cristina Falls but some of the other waterfalls in Iligan City as well.

The powerful waterfalls powers Agus HydroElectric Plant which is one of the primary source of electricity, not only for Iligan, but for the whole region of Mindanao. Its huge drop and its powerful current makes it one of the grandest in the country. It is also surprisingly accessible.

NPC NATURE’S PARK

Maria Cristina Falls is located inside National Power Corporation (NPC) Nature’s Park which broke ground last 2006 and is now open to the public. Maria Cristina Falls is definitely one of the highlights when visiting the park but it’s not the only thing to do once inside.

Upon entering the park, ride the shuttle and drop off at their mini zoo. It houses a crocodile farm, a couple of ostriches, kois and a good collection of birds. There’s also a butterfly sanctuary and an orchidarium. All of these attractions are already included in the entrance fee.

It is nested in the lower slope of Mount Ragang, also called as Mount Piapayungan or Blue Mountain, an active strato-volcano that sits in the boundary of Lanao del Sur and North Cotabato. There are various tales and side stories of the discovery of this natural wonder. Some say that it was accidentally discovered by military during a clearing operations, while other say that locals already know the place ever since. The latter seems more true and probable, a beauty of such grandeur would have been impossible to have gone unnoticed. The locals probably just kept it as secret or ignored it thinking it was just a normal scene.

Bunga falls is a perfect weekend destination near Manila. We recommend bringing your own car since it’s just a 2-3 hour trip. It’s also easier to sidetrip to other places like Nagcarlan Underground Cemetery, Yambo Lake, Pandin Lake, etc. if you have a car. Don’t forget to ask for directions when you’re already en route to Nagcarlan. The sign to Bunga Falls is not that noticeable. There are designated parking area for a minimal fee. The falls is just 5 minutes away from the parking lot; no long hike needed.

In Bunga, it’s best to rent a cottage so you could have a place for your things. Some cottages also have tables so you could take your lunch there. Bring packed lunch, since there are no stores in the area to buy meals. You can rent salbabidas or water tubes and swim at the base of the falls. If you have valuables, just leave them in your car just to be safe as the place could get crowded during lunch hours. A lot of locals also visit the place during weekends.
The twin falls is approximately 15-meter high. Cliff-diving is possible but be extra careful on your way up. From the cottages, head up to the flight of stairs leading to the parking lot. You will notice a trail on your left. Take caution as the trail is not that established and can get really slippery. Remember to keep your arms tight to the body when jumping.
We heard some stories from our friends that they were not allowed to jump because they’re girls. However, during our trip, we saw a couple of girls who took the leap from the top of the falls; we’re guessing it’s not really an official policy.

The province of La Union, north of Manila is known for its famous surfing spots – with the town of San Juan being the most visited. In recent years, the sleepy surfing town has been making waves into the local and international surfing scene. Just a few minutes away from here is San Gabriel where Tangadan Falls is located – overlooked, but still worth a visit!

GETTING THERE
  1. Make your way to San Juan, La Union. Buses to Laoag and Vigan usually passes by San Juan.
  2. From San Juan La Union, ride a jeepney going to San Gabriel.
  3. From San Gabriel, you may ride a tricycle going the the Tangadan Falls jump-off. Just ask the tricycle driver to drop you off there.
There are now two jump-offs to Tangadan Falls. If you’re commuting, once you reach San Gabriel, tricycle drivers will bring you to the jump-off which requires you to river trek (Baroro River) for around an hour. If you have your own car, there’s a possible jump-off beyond the town of San Gabriel which will only require you a 20-minute hike down to the falls.
We brought our own car (Toyota Vios) and just used Google Maps to look for the easier jump-off (We typed in Tangadan falls). Be extra careful as the road can be very steep. Make sure your car can take it – preferably an SUV. The drive to San Juan took around 5-6 hours with stopovers while the drive to the jump-off took 40 minutes.

Niludhan Falls, one of Negros Island’s underrated natural attractions, lies hidden amidst its forests and vast sugarcane plantations and agricultural lands in Bayawan City, Negros Oriental. This water wonder is conveniently located right beside the main road along the city’s northern border connecting Brgy. Dawis to adjacent Mabinay town.
Even as a local of Bayawan, I have never heard of this particular waterfalls until I was in college when I managed to see this local natural creation for the first time. A river feeds the 25-meter wide waterfalls that ends on a 40-meter vertical drop, creating the magnificent curtain falls. One can witness and capture its full magnificence, which resembles that of the Tinuy-an Falls in Bislig, during the rainy season or after a relatively strong downpour. During summer, the waterfalls could get sparse but is still equally stunning. Every angle of the falls is picture-perfect amidst the blue skies, its turquoise basin and the lush green vegetation surrounding the falls.
